MOVING CHECKLIST

 

ONE MONTH BEFORE MOVING

  • Decide what to move and what not to move – have a yard sale and/or make charitable donation
  • Moving Arrangements - Make truck rental reservations or arrangements with a moving company
  • Moving Supplies - Gather boxes, tape, permanent markers to write contents on boxes
  • Travel Plans - Make hotel, airline, rental car reservations.  If driving, plan travel route by car
  • Save All Moving Receipts - Many moving expenses are tax deductible.  Legal, Medical, Dental, School and Insurance Records - Put in a safe and accessible place.  Obtain transfers for prescription medications, eyeglasses, school transcripts, etc.
  • Real Estate Documents - Put all documents related to real estate transactions in a safe, accessible place
  • Church, clubs & civic organizations - Transfer memberships, get letters of introduction for new area
  • Post Office - Pick up copy of the U.S. Postal Service “Movers Guide” with Change of Address forms.  Remember to notify Post Office, Charge Accounts, Credit Cards, Friends, Relatives, Employer, Business Associates, Service Providers and Subscriptions (may require at least 6 weeks notice) 

TWO WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

  • Utilities - Inform gas, electric, water, fuel company, trash service, newspaper and cable company of your move; call utility and service providers to establish service in your new location
  • Telephone Service - make arrangements to discontinue local service and begin service in new location
  • Recruit moving day help
  • Confirm all travel reservations
  • Set aside appliance instruction booklets and other household information that should not be packed
  • Plan to allow time after your move to clean the house, or make arrangements with a cleaning service
  • Arrange to close or transfer your bank account(s), safe deposit box, and/or Credit Union account
  • Plan ahead for special transporting of pets, children, and elderly family members if necessary
  • Close out local charge accounts 

THE DAY BEFORE MOVING

  • Moving Materials - For last minute packing, set aside boxes, tape, pocket knife, rope, markers
  •  Truck - Pick up rental truck or confirm arrival of moving van
  • Automobiles - Check oil and gas
  • Travel Arrangements - Make sure you have tickets, charge cards, and a phone card

ON MOVING DAY – THE DAY BEFORE SETTLEMENT

  • Valuables - Carry jewelry and important documents yourself or use registered mail
  • Point of Contact - Let close friend or relative know travel route and schedule you will travel including overnight stops; use them as a message center if people need to reach you while “in transit”
  • Double Check - Refrigerator, closets, drawers, vanities, and shelves to be sure they are all empty
  • Clean -  Remove all trash and debris and leave the property in “broom clean” condition
  • Leave - Automatic garage door opener remotes & booklets on systems & appliances for new owners
  • Keys - Bring all keys for house, storage area, mailbox, to settlement
  • Funds Needed for Settlement - Call Realtor or Settlement Company to find out final amount you need to bring to settlement (if any); go to bank and get certified check or cashiers check 

TO DO AFTER MOVING

  • Enroll children in new school(s)
  • Register to vote
  • Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to register your vehicles and obtain a new drivers license
  • Find new doctor/dentist - transfer files for medical histories directly from previous doctor/dentist
  • Transfer insurance policies to an agent in your new community
  • Locate the hospital, police and fire stations nearest your home.  Write down emergency phone numbers for Police, Fire, Poison Control, etc.
  • Pets - find new veterinarian and find out local regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.
